Say No to Plastic Bags

Nowadays, no matter where you go, you will see almost every person carrying their shopping items in plastic bags. There is no doubt that they can bring some advantages to everyone. They are versatile, durable, waterproof, convenient, light weight and very, very cheap. However, with all the benefits of using them comes a long list of nagging problems.
On the one hand, plastic bags have been known to all the people that they can cause amount of environmental damage. According to surveys, depending on the thickness, they will take between 20 and 1,000 years to break down in the environment. That means these plastic bags which are thrown away will stay in environment for a longer time. The longer they stay in environment, the greater the chances of environmental damage. The biggest damage is that they may disrupt waterways and block drains which can cause a lot of other dangerous matters besides pollute the environment. You may have heard that in Bangladesh, serious and repeated flooding, which resulted in major loss of life, was reportedly linked to drain blocking caused by plastic bags. And they also can contaminate the soil through preventing it from absorbing water and nutrients from the land surface. And at the same time they can influence the beauty of a city, especially these tourist attractions.
On the other hand, more and more animals, such as whales, turtles and fish, are being found strangled in oceans, mainly because of plastic bags, which can choke and starve them, are full of their living environment. Besides animals, babies and small children have also been reported to have lost their life on account of them. They like putting all kinds of things into their mouths without knowing what they are eating. If they are not being noticed by adults in this condition, we could not imagine the consequences.
Dreadfully, we all know that plastic bags are non-degradable, so they are taking up a lot of space. The only way to get rid of them is to burn them up. When burnt, they give off toxic fumes into the environment which can kill people's life.
