Bullet Proof Uniforms for Soldiers and Police

This has drawn attention to designing bullet proof uniforms which bring lower body armor in to the equation to protect the large femoral arteries and also to incorporate tourniquets in the uniforms as well. Being able to tourniquet your leg on the battlefield first and foremost can save the life of a soldier or police officer if wounded in the field when there is no medical attention close by. Research has shown that surgeons have a much higher chance of vascular reconstruction if the tourniquet is applied as soon as possible on the battlefield in the event of a major leg injury.
Reports have also come back from the battlefield where soldiers are sitting on their bullet proof vest when riding in vehicle carriers to protect themselves from explosions from underneath the vehicles. This in turn leaves their upper body exposed and vulnerable. Having lower body armor would increase the odds dramatically of all soldiers that are subject to road side bombs. There is also the threat of small arms fire for both the soldier and police officers. Whether you are storming in a rural or in town home searching for insurgents or a civilian drug house looking for armed drug dealers, soldiers and officers are at risk of getting shot with handguns.
Having bullet proof uniforms with pants and shirts for police officers, soldiers and private security people would provide outstanding protection that would save countless lives and give all who wear them a greater confidence to perform their duties better, knowing they have that extra protection for their body. All of the soldiers and law enforcement personnel when in the field working to secure an area, building or home are required to wear their bullet proof vest. This still leaves a lot of exposure for the rest of your body that is unprotected.
There is another area of the body that has always been a very vulnerable area that many police officers and soldiers have been killed from. This is the armpit area. Police officers are taught in some cases when in a shoot out with someone and no cover is available for the police officer to protect themselves from the shooter, the police officer will turn sideways as to give the person shooting at them a smaller target.
Sometimes this is a natural reaction also to turn from someone who is shooting at you. This reaction leaves your side exposed, especially your upper arm where if shot there, the bullet can travel through your arm through your armpit and in to your chest hitting your lungs, heart or any number of vital organs that could result in death. A ballistic uniform with armpit protection would be an outstanding asset to all soldiers and police officers to protect this very vulnerable area.
It seems there will always wars for soldiers to fight and plenty of criminals and drug dealers to track down. Unfortunately enemies with their sights set on trying to harm our soldiers, or criminals trying to harm our police officers and security personnel, there is a definite need for this type of protection. Bullet proof uniforms are the future for our protectors.
